Spring Mar–May
Wildflowers, birding and the best hiking temperatures. Wind can be sharp.
Mohave County, Arizona PLATTED 1958
A high-desert outpost between Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Joshua trees, dark skies, a wilderness at the edge of town — and a community that likes its independence.
01 — Signal
Dolan Springs is not a resort, a ghost town, or a suburb. It is fifty-eight square miles of high desert in Mohave County, where people live because they want space, silence and a view that does not stop.
The town sits where the Detrital Valley meets the Cerbat Mountains, six miles off US 93 along Pierce Ferry Road. Most travellers are on their way somewhere else — the Grand Canyon Skywalk, Lake Mead, Las Vegas. That is both the challenge and the charm.
There is a school, a library, a water company, a volunteer fire district and a community council that has been organising things since 1968. There are Joshua trees, big skies and trailheads within walking distance of the pavement. There is no city hall, no stoplight and no pretence.
This guide is independent. It exists to point you toward the good stuff, tell you the truth about the distances, and send you home with sand in your shoes.
02 — Coordinates
Dolan Springs is roughly midway between Las Vegas and Kingman, with the Grand Canyon’s West Rim to the northeast and the Colorado River to the north. Distances below are approximate road miles.
Drive times are estimates for normal conditions. Add fuel, photo and shuttle time. US 93 can be slow behind trucks.

Triple-digit afternoons. Start before dawn, carry extra water, watch for monsoon storms.
Clear, cooling days and the community celebration season. Ideal for the wilderness.
Cold nights, mild days, occasional snow on the peaks. Quiet roads and long shadows.
Carry at least a gallon of water per person per day, tell someone your route, and turn around if the road gets worse than your vehicle. Monsoon floods can close washes in minutes.
